Josefien Stoppelenburg (1981, lyrical soprano) graduated from the Amsterdam Conservatory of Music and has attended master classes of, among others, Laura Sarti, Helmuth Kretschmar, Henk Smit, Eva Blahova and Ingrid Kremling, Henner Leyhe, Gary Holt and James Bowman. She has also benefitted from lessons with Dutch singing teachers such as Eleonora Volkert, Hanneke Kaasschieter and Annemarie Kremer.
Her repertoire is very wide, ranging from early to contemporary music. She is regularly invited as a soloist in oratories in the Netherlands and Germany and at national choral events such as ‘Grootkoor’). She sang Haydn’s ‘Schöpfung’, ‘Maria Vespers’ by Monteverdi, Bach’s ‘St. John’s Passion’ and ‘St. Matthew’s Passion’, Händel’s ‘Messiah’, Mozart’s – ‘Requiem’ , Poulenc ‘s ‘Gloria’ and Masses by Rossini, Gounod, Janáçek, Zelenka and Schubert. From 2005 until 2007 she was part of the Young Opera Ensemble of Cologne( Junge Kammeroper Köln – Germany). With freelance opera productions she performed several roles, such as Serpina (La Serva Padrone- Pergolesi), Amor (‘Orfeus ed Euridice’, Gluck) and Belinda (‘Dido and Aeneas’, Purcell). She sang with Salon Orchestra Pluche (NL), where she was able to demonstrate her flexibility and the extensiveness of her repertoire, containing opera, operetta, musical and lied. Concerts with several professional and semi-professional orchestras enabled her to sing important lyrical soprano-aria’s such as Micaela- ‘Carmen’, Fiordiligi – ‘Cosí fan tutte’, Pamina- ‘Zauberflöte’, and Rusalka – ‘Rusalka’.
Josefien performs with several ensembles. She forms a duo with organ player Gijs Boelen , with whom she performs regularly in the Netherlands and Germany. With her sister Charlotte she forms the duo Unique Harmony of Two Voices. In 1997, the sisters were the first to win the Princes Christina Competition for vocalists after which they built up a national and international reputation. They are regularly seen and heard on Dutch national television and radio. Concert tours have taken them to the United States, Venezuela, the United Arab Emirates and South Africa. The exceptional way their voices blend, perfected by outstanding individual technique and years of experience together has enabled them to reach a large audience. They worked with orchestras like Noord Nederlands Orkest, Nationaal Philharmonisch Orkest, Johan Willem Friso Kapel, Amsterdams Promenade Orkest and Camerata Amsterdam and with conductors like Marcus Creed, Vladimir Jurowksi, Jurjen Hempel, Jan Stulen, Michael Tabachnik, Jeroen Weierink and Jules van Hessen. The sisters have also sung at chamber music festivals , like the Grachtenfestival Amsterdam (2008) and Ostfriesische Musiksommer (2008). They are frequently asked to perform during festivities whether for business firms or private persons.
At present, Josefien regularly performs Poulenc’s famous mono-opera La Voix Humaine. This year she partook in the Dutch International Chamber Opera Festival 2009 and last year in the Axis Festival . Her interpretation will be broadcasted on Cultura Television and will be performed in several Dutch theaters this upcoming season. Furthermore, among her activities she is arranging a concert with Camerata Amsterdam to sing the Stabat Mater by Pergolesi in the Bach-version (Psalm 51 – Die Kantate). Josefien is also currently planning a recital in the Bethaniënklooster in Amsterdam on the 30th of September 2009, which will consist of music composed especially for her duo Unique Harmony of Two Voices.
